These insects are already scaring summer residents and landowners. The white cicadas is a native of North America, from where the Kolorodsky bug, which has become so dear, came to us. Rumor has it that the potato destroyer, which appeared during the Cold War, was catapulted into the Soviet fields of the CIA. Is it worth considering the white cicadas as a new saboteur? Hard to tell. Now this insect is found in South America and in Europe. And in the Krasnodar Territory of a neighboring country, biologists “found the white cicadas” in 2009. In Ukraine, they began to notice it in 2010 … It seems that this harmful insect is conquering the world.
White cicadas are also called citrus or Metcalf (Metcalfapruіnosa). These medium-sized (10-12 mm), off-white or brown-gray insects sucking plant juices appeared in Ukraine about seven years ago in the south, southeast of the country and in Transcarpathia. In no case should you confuse the white cicadas with the American white butterfly (25-36 mm) of snow-white color, whose homeland is also North America (it first appeared in Transcarpathia in 1952 and harms more than 230 species of plants).
White cicadas to taste more than 300 species of fruit and berry and herbaceous plants in our household plots and cottages. Through punctures made by these insects, pathogens of viral and bacterial infections penetrate into plants; in places of punctures, plant tissues die, ovaries and fruits fall. Cicadas also carry cytoplasmic and viral diseases of plants. During the nutrition of the circadian sweet waste in the form of honeydew is secreted, in the place of which the soot fungi settle, which impede the processes of photosynthesis.
As a result, immunity is weakened in plants inhabited by cicadas, growth is slowed down, and the sugar content of fruits is reduced. In August, one female lays about 100 eggs in the upper layer of the tree bark; in spring, larvae emerge, which after linting form a fluffy, sticky white wax mass in the form of “cobwebs” and “lumps”, where they hide. Adult cicadas appear in August.
Mow weeds in the garden and weed weeds in the beds; carry out spring treatment of plants with insecto-acaricides before flowering.
Parts of plants affected by metalfalf should be cut off and destroyed; spray plants with insect acaricides (for example, Ukrainian Brunka).
Spraying the larvae of plants (with a “web”) with a solution of household soap (grind three pieces of soap and dissolve in 10 l of heated water (do not boil!), Rinse the soap with water the next day.
Spray the larvae with a garlic solution: chop and insist one large glass of garlic) in 1 liter of water a week in a dark place at room temperature, at the same time close the jar with a lid, then strain and dilute the resulting infusion in 50 liters of water, then spray the affected plants.
